The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is a renowned institution and the only university of technology in the Western Cape. It is also the largest university in the region, with over 30,000 students enrolled. Research indicates that CPUT has an acceptance rate of 91%, based on the number of admissions compared to applications and other enrollment data.

This means that a significant percentage of applicants are admitted each year. However, to be accepted, applicants must meet the specific admission requirements for both the university and the programs they wish to study. CPUT accepts applications for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs across six faculties; Applied Sciences, Business and Management Sciences, Education, Engineering & the Built Environment, Informatics and Design, and Health and Wellness Sciences, therefore, the acceptance rates can vary by program, and some courses may have more competitive entry requirements than others.

Cape Peninsula University of Technology Acceptance Rate And Statistics

The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is a prominent institution and the only university of technology in the Western Cape. It is also the largest university in the region, with more than 30,000 students enrolled. In 2024, the university’s total headcount was 35,482 students. Of these, 8,905 were first-time entering undergraduate students, making up 25% of the total student population. Postgraduate students numbered 2,643, while the undergraduate student population stood at 32,714.

CPUT has an acceptance rate of approximately 91%, based on the ratio of admissions to applications and other enrollment data. Regarding graduate output, the university produced a total of 7,885 graduates. Among these, 6,997 were undergraduate students, representing 79% of the total graduate success rate. The success rate for African undergraduate students was 76%. For postgraduate students, there were 888 graduates, reflecting a 34% success rate. Overall, the university achieved a success rate of 78% across all programs.

Admission Requirements At Cape Peninsula University of Technology

Applicants must generally meet certain academic qualifications, which may include a Senior Certificate or an equivalent qualification. For students following the Cambridge system, the following requirements apply:

  • A minimum of five different subjects passed at the IGCSE and HIGCSE levels, with at least two subjects at the HIGCSE level.
  • A pass in the language of instruction at the University (either English or Afrikaans).
  • Specific pass grades: IGCSE: A, B, or C; HIGCSE: 1, 2, or 3.

Other senior school qualifications will be considered on merit.

International Applicants

  • Undergraduate Applications: International applicants must meet the requirements for a Matriculation Exemption to enrol in degree programs at South African universities.
  • Advanced Diploma and Postgraduate Applications: A SAQA certificate is mandatory for all first-year undergraduate programs (such as Higher Certificates and Diplomas).
