Mission and Vision of SMU

The mission of SMU is to provide professional training and education in various health disciplines, thereby enhancing healthcare services in the community (About Us | SMU, 2021). The university emphasizes excellence in teaching, innovative research, and community engagement as pivotal components of its operations. Its vision is to be recognized as a benchmark institution for holistic health sciences education, thereby addressing the health needs of individuals, families, and broader communities (Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, 2025).

SMU supports a range of academic programs, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programs, across several schools that encompass medicine, oral health, pharmacy, health care sciences, and science and technology (Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences – University of Pretoria, 2025). The institution aims to not only produce healthcare professionals but also to contribute significantly to the improvement of health outcomes in South Africa and beyond.

Registration Dates for SMU

Registration commences for All Returning Students;

  • 6th January to 7th February 2025

Registration commences for first-time entering students;

  • 22nd January 2025

Application Procedure And Requirements For SMU

  • An application form obtainable from Home Affairs,
  • A valid passport (for a year or more),
  • Admission letter from the University,
  • A letter from the institution in support of your study visa (International office),
  • Bank statement – Copy of passport or I.D of parent or guardian responsible for the financial support and a supporting letter,
  • A study visa fee of R425-00,
  • Proof of medical aid cover confirming that you will be covered while in SA. Medical reports (including Radiology & Pathology).
  • A police clearance certificate from your country of origin,
  • Repatriation fee of R585-00,
  • Copy of yellow fever vaccination (If relevant),
  • If the applicant is under 21 years old, there should be a letter of consent from a parent or guardian

Required Documents To Attach When I applying

Uploading scanned Documents (Undergraduate Applicants):

Please remember to upload the following certified and individually scanned (PDF format only) documents:

  • Certified copy of your ID/passport document (compulsory).
  • Certified Grade 11 end-of-year examination results (for those currently in grade 12) or your National Senior/Matric/IEB Certificate (if you have already completed Grade 12).
  • Those rewriting NSC, must indicate on the application and submit proof of re-writing.
  • Certified copies of your degree certificate(s) and academic record (if you attended or are currently a student at SMU or another university).
  • Certified copy of your marriage certificate (if applicable).
  • Proof of payment of the compulsory and non-refundable application fee of R300.00

Uploading scanned Documents (Postgraduate Applicants):

  • Matric exemption certificate (including subject marks)
  • ID document / Passport / Work permit / Study permit
  • Diploma/Degree certificate/s
  • Comprehensive academic record (indicating marks obtained for subjects)
  • Certificate of registration with the relevant professions council (if applicable)
  • Letter of appointment as Registrar with a date of assumption of duty: applicants for M Med and M Dent students NB: letter from the employer, e.g. Hospital HR.
  • Motivational letter and CV (Public Health and MPharm applicants only)
  • Students with non-South African qualifications must attach an SAQA evaluation certificate with their previous degrees obtained.
  • Non-refundable compulsory Application fee of R300

Categories Of International Students

SMU has the following categories of International students: These categories pay fees as follows:

  • All international students pay an annual membership fee,
  • SADC students pay an annual levy and annual local tuition fees,
  • Non-SADC students from Africa pay an annual levy and twice (2x) the annual tuition fees,
  • Students from outside Africa pay an annual levy and thrice (3x) the annual tuition fees.

Students on Exchange Programmes

*NB Students on exchange programmes/elective terms are not required to pay these fees (Annual Membership Fee & Foreign levy).

  • All international students pay an annual membership fee,
  • SADC students pay an annual levy and annual local tuition fees,
  • Non-SADC students from Africa pay an annual levy and twice (2x) the annual tuition fees,
  • Students from outside Africa pay an annual levy and thrice (3x) the annual tuition fees.

International Students Organisation

All international students registered with the Sefako Makgatho Health Science University regardless of discipline are automatically members of SMUISO.                        

The following are key activities that we organize for International Students:

  • Special orientation programme for new International Students,
  • Elections of the new executive committee,
  • Welcome function,
  • Trip to places of interest to students,
  • Cultural day celebration in September
  • End of the year function in October.
