Registration Commence For All Returning Students;

  • 6th January to 7th February 2025

Registration commences for first-time entering students;

  • 22nd January 2025

Please Read Thoroughly Below Before You Continue With Your Application

  • You are allowed to apply for two study choices. If you wish to apply for both under and postgraduate programmes, you should apply for them separately, and provide the required documentation for each of them. However, you only pay one application fee for both.
  • Apply online for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes by clicking here.

  • You should pay the non-refundable application fee of R300.00. Use your ID or Passport number as a reference when making payment.
  • No manual posted or over-the-counter applications will be accepted.

• Commencement of the 2025 academic year for returning students:
Lectures, clinical sessions, and practicum sessions commence for registered
returning students, excluding BSC II/ECPIII, BSC III/ECP IV students

13 January 2025

Closing Date: Academic Exclusions Appeals for the 2024 academic year

17 January 2025

Last Day: Registration ends for all returning (undergraduate &
Postgraduate) students.

21 January 2025

Lectures and practicum sessions commence for BSCII, III, BSC ECPII, III & IV.

22 January 2025

Registration commences for 2025 FTEN students

How To Apply As an International Student

 All non-South African citizens and non-permanent residents are required to:

  • submit the documents mentioned in number (e) above;
  • submit previous foreign qualifications that have been evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
  • Obtain study permits before registering as a student. Application for study permits should be submitted to the Department of Home Affairs (South Africa), Consulate or High Commissioner in your country of residence/origin, and should be in favour of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU). The study permit should be submitted during registration.

Required Documentation To Attach When Applying To SMU

When applying online, candidates must prepare and upload several essential documents. For undergraduate applicants, the following documents are typically required:

  • Certified copy of the ID/passport document (compulsory).
  • Certified Grade 11 end-of-year examination results or the National Senior/Matric/IEB Certificate for those who have completed Grade 12.
  • Certified copies of any previous degree certificates and academic records if applicable.
  • Proof of payment of the application fee.
  • Postgraduate applicants must also provide a comprehensive academic record, additional identification, and specific documentation relevant to their field of study

Application Procedure And Requirements For Study Visa

  • An application form obtainable from Home Affairs,
  • A valid passport (for a year or more),
  • Admission letter from the University,
  • A letter from the institution in support of your study visa (International office),
  • Bank statement – Copy of passport or I.D of parent or guardian responsible for the financial support and a supporting letter,
  • A study visa fee of R425-00,
  • Provide proof of medical aid coverage confirming that you will be covered in SA. Medical reports (including Radiology & Pathology).
  • A police clearance certificate from your country of origin,
  • Repatriation fee of R585-00,
  • Copy of yellow fever vaccination (If relevant),
  • If the applicant is under 21 years old, there should be a letter of consent from the parent or guardian.
