Below are the necessary details about the registration fees for undergraduate students, postgraduate students, other returning students, and first-time students who are now registering to be part of their institution. This information will help those who owe the school and those who have privileges to pay less than the actual:

First-Year Registration Fees

  • ​Every first-time student who has been accepted at the University must pay a registration fee of R4500.​
  • Students who have received bursaries confirmed by NSFAS or recognized sponsors are generally not required to pay the registration fee and will be automatically approved for registration.
  • Students awaiting the outcome of a bursary application must pay the full registration fee.
  • Any special cases should be directed to the Student Appeals Committee or the Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

International Students

  • All international students must pay their fees in full upon registration, including any outstanding fees from previous years. Necessary clearance documents should be submitted to the International Affairs Office. This requirement is non-negotiable according to the Student Fee policy.

Returning Students

Students with Bursaries:

  • Bursary holders who are promoted to the next level of study, and do not owe the University, must provide a confirmation letter from their sponsor for the next academic year or appear on the sponsor’s list.
  • Students who do not owe money and have a credit of R4500 or more will be automatically approved for registration.

Students who are promoted but owe money will be classified based on the thresholds below:

  • If they owe less than R150,000, they must sign an Acknowledgment of Debt (AOD) form as per the approved payment plan.
  • Amounts greater than R150,000 will be handled by the Student Debt Fee Appeals Committee, which will consider factors like academic progress and financial hardship. Students with debts over R50,000 may not register for postgraduate studies and must show proof of application for concessionary loans.

Non-Bursary Holders:

  • Self-funded students, not on any bursary list, will need to pay the registration fee.
  • They must complete an AOD form to agree on a payment plan.
  • Any student with outstanding amounts must sign AOD forms and preferably provide a loan agreement from a registered financial institution.
  • Payment Mechanics
  • For debts of R10,000 or less, the full balance must be cleared before registration.
  • For debts between R10,001 and R40,000, students must pay R10,000 and half of the remaining balance, plus the registration fee.
  • For debts between R40,001 and R130,000, a minimum payment of R20,000 is required along with registration fees, with an AOD for the remaining balance.

Students with debts will be blocked. Any issues arising from outstanding debts should be escalated as follows:

  • Debts ≤ R100,000: Contact the Deputy Director, Revenue & Receivables.
  • Debts > R100,000 and < R150,000: Contact the Chief Financial Officer.
  • Debts ≥ R150,000: Refer to the Student Debt Appeals Committee.

Fee Increases For the Next Academic Year

  • The fees will increase by 7% for tuition and 8% for university-owned accommodation. Off-campus residence fees will be charged based on the actual amount the service provider charges the University. Transportation costs will follow the same policy.

Guidelines for Students with Debt

  • R0 – R10,000: Pay the full amount owed plus registration (Total = Debt + R4500).
  • R10,001 – R40,000: Pay R10,000, plus 50% of the outstanding balance, plus registration.
  • R40,001 – R100,000: Pay R25,000 plus registration; a payment agreement is required.
  • R100,000 and above: Registration will be blocked, and the situation will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

First-Year Students

  • A student must have an average mark of 80% or higher in their Grade 12 final exams to qualify for the tuition merit bursary.​ This average is calculated by adding the percentages of the six best subjects (excluding Life Orientation) and dividing by six. Receiving this bursary means a 50% discount on tuition fees.
  • First-year students are eligible for this bursary if they are studying for their first degree after completing Grade 12.
  • Students who have previously studied at other institutions are not eligible for this bursary.

Continuing Senior Students

These bursaries are available for full-time senior students:

  • Sponsored students who pass all their subjects with a mark of 80% or above on their first attempt qualify for a R5,000 tuition waiver, depending on the rules of their sponsorship.
  • Self-funded students who also pass all subjects with an overall mark of 80-100% on their first attempt qualify for a 50% waiver of their full tuition fees.
  • If a student qualifies for full tuition coverage but receives a bursary that does not fully cover their fees, their tuition fee will be adjusted to only the difference between the total tuition and the received bursary.
  • Students do not need to fill out an application form to qualify for these bursaries, and there is no refund available for University tuition fee bursaries.

Postgraduate Students

To encourage enrollment at the postgraduate level:

  • Students who achieve a mark of 70% in their previous year can apply for a Postgraduate Bursary from the University. Application forms can be downloaded from the website or obtained from the Financial Aid Office.
  • Students are still responsible for paying the registration fee of R4500, residence fees, and any other expenses.
  • There are no refunds for postgraduate tuition fee bursaries, and any credit from this bursary will be returned to the University without the student’s consent.
  • The bursaries are applicable only if the student is not receiving another bursary or sponsorship.

Requirements For Registration 

  • Students with external bursaries (like NRF, CSIR, SAMRC, PRF, etc.) cannot receive a postgraduate tuition fee bursary.
  • If a student qualifies for the postgraduate tuition fee bursary and receives a bursary that does not cover the full tuition costs, the University bursary will be adjusted to cover only the difference.
  • Students who do not complete their studies within the required timeframe will lose eligibility for the postgraduate bursary from the University.
  • Employed students are not eligible for these bursaries.
  • Bursaries must be applied for through the Financial Aid Office and are not granted automatically.
