Selection and Admission Requirements
Selection
- For practical reasons, only a limited number of applicants can be admitted to the degree program. Students are therefore selected on merit by a Selection Committee and notified accordingly by the office of the Registrar. The selection criteria and the selection process are decided annually by a subcommittee of the School of Medicine.
- Students who have been excluded from Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University or any other University may apply as part of the normal admission and selection processes, subject to Rule SMB 1.2.2 (v).
Admission requirements
- Applications for admission to MBChB I can be considered only from students who have/or are about to receive a Matriculation or Matriculation Exemption Certificate with pass marks of a C (HG) or equivalent in Mathematics and Physical Science. Note: If an applicant’s matriculation certificate does not indicate a pass in Mathematics, a further certificate to the effect that an Assessment in Mathematics of a standard at least equivalent to that of the Matriculation Assessment has been passed, is required.
Duration
The minimum duration of the degree program is six years, and the maximum duration is 8 years.

Admission requirements
An applicant must have obtained (a) an NSC with a Bachelor endorsement; (b) a minimum APS of 24 and (c) the following minimum APS per subject:
- English – 4
- Mathematics – 4
- Life Science – 4
- Physical Science – 4

Selection and Admission Requirements
Selection Process
- Successful applicants will be admitted to the first-year level. The BPharm Selection Committee will screen all candidates who comply with the selection requirements and the successful candidates will be informed of the outcome of the selection process by the Enrolment office.
General information for registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC):
- All students admitted to the first year of study must register with the SAPC before 31 March of the relevant year. Please contact the School of Pharmacy for further information.
Note: These rules must comply with the proposed regulations of the SA Pharmacy Council as promulgated in terms of the Pharmacy Act, as amended.
