he Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) is recognized as a distinguished institution in South Africa, with a focus on health sciences education. The Admissions Office at SMU is tasked with managing the applications for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Serving as the entry point to the university, it is committed to ensuring a seamless and efficient application experience for all candidates. For the 2026-2027 academic year, the application period commenced on 6th January 2025, with specific deadlines outlined for various programs: applications for undergraduate qualifications will close on 7th February 2025 and those for postgraduate qualifications will end on August 30, 2025. Prospective students are strongly encouraged to submit their applications early to avoid potential disappointment, as late applications cannot be accepted due to the overwhelming number of submissions received.

Admission Criteria at Sefako Makgatho University

Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) has different admission criteria for different programs.

Medicine

Applicants are preselected based on their Grade 11 results
Applicants must have an admission point score (APS) of at least 35
Applicants are preselected based on their performance in English, Life Sciences, Physical Science, and Mathematics
Applicants are offered a provisional place based on their Grade 11 results

Health Care Sciences

Applicants must complete clinical training in approved facilities for each year of study
Applicants must complete a minimum number of clinical training hours as required by the HPCSA

Science and Technology

Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 5 in Mathematics
Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 4 in Life Science and Physical Science
Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 4 in any two other NSC subjects

Online application

Applicants must submit a certified copy of their ID/passport document
Applicants must submit certified Grade 11 end-of-year examination results
Applicants must submit degree certificate(s) and academic record
Applicants can apply for a maximum of two qualifications, but the university prioritizes first-choice application

Application Procedure And Requirements

An application form obtainable from Home Affairs,
A valid passport (for a year or more),
Admission letter from the University,
A letter from the institution in support of your study visa (International office),
Bank statement – Copy of passport or I.D of parent or guardian responsible for the financial support and a supporting letter,
A study visa fee of R425-00,
Proof of medical aid cover confirming that you will be covered while in SA. Medical reports (including Radiology & Pathology).
A police clearance certificate from your country of origin,
Repatriation fee of R585-00,
Copy of yellow fever vaccination (If relevant),
If the applicant is under 21 years old, there should be a letter of consent from the parent or guardian.
