Registration or Commencement Dates

  • Registration commences for all returning students: 6th January to 7th February 2025
  • Registration commences for first entering students: on 22nd January 2025

How Do I Apply Online?

To apply online, you need;

  • Access to the internet and a valid email address.
  • To complete the Application Form accurately online.
  • Specify the names of your first and second-choice degrees (if applicable).
  • Pay the R300 non-refundable application fee; and

Upload the following documents:

certified copies of your ID/passport; Grade 11/12 results; academic record (if you have attended other universities including SMU) and proof of payment of the non-refundable application fee

If I am an international student, how do I apply to study at SMU?

All non-South African citizens and non-permanent residents must obtain a study permit before registering as students. Application for study permits should be submitted to the South African Home Affairs, Consulate or High Commissioner in your country of residence/origin and should be in favour of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU). The study permit should be submitted during registration.

What documents do I attach to the application form?

  • Certified copy of your ID or Birth Certificate.
  • Certified copy of final Grade 11 results or mid-year Grade 12 results or National Senior Certificate (NSC)/Matric Certificate (if you have completed Grade 12/Matric).
  • Official academic record(s) from previous university (ies) attend, including SMU (if applicable).
  • Proof of application fee payment (copy of deposit slip).

Required Document to Use When Applying to SMU

Please remember to upload the following certified and individually scanned (PDF format only) documents:

  • Certified copy of your ID/passport document (compulsory).
  • Certified Grade 11 end-of-year examination results (for those currently in Grade 12) or your National Senior/Matric/IEB Certificate (if you have already completed Grade 12).
  • Those rewriting the NSC must indicate on the application and submit proof of rewriting.
  • Certified copies of your degree certificate(s) and academic record (if you attended or are currently a student at SMU or another university).
  • Certified copy of your marriage certificate (if applicable).
  • Proof of payment of the compulsory and non-refundable application fee of R300.00

  • Matric exemption certificate (including subject marks)
  • ID document / Passport / Work permit / Study permit
  • Diploma/Degree certificate/s
  • Comprehensive academic record (indicating marks obtained for subjects)
  • Certificate of registration with the relevant professions council (if applicable)
  • Letter of appointment as Registrar with a date of assumption of duty: Applicants for M Med and M Dent students NB: letter from the employer, e.g. Hospital HR.
  • Motivational letter and CV (Public Health and MPharm applicants only)
  • Students with non-South African qualifications must attach an SAQA evaluation certificate with their previous degrees obtained.
  • Non-refundable compulsory application fee of R300
