Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) was officially established by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr. Blade Nzimande, through a proclamation in the South African Government Gazette on May 16, 2014. This followed his 2011 announcement intending to separate the Medunsa Campus from the University of Limpopo, based on recommendations from a task team led by renowned academics.

You can apply online, but currently, online applications are limited to undergraduate qualifications for South African and international applicants who have written or are studying towards:
- The National Senior Certificate (NSC)
- Independent Examination Board (IEB) certificate
- Studies at other South African universities.

To apply online, you need:
- Access to the internet and a valid email address.
- Complete the Application Form accurately online.
- Specify the names of your first and second-choice degrees (if applicable).
- Pay the R300 non-refundable application fee.
- Upload the following documents:
- Certified copies of your ID/passport
- Grade 11/12 results
- Academic record (if previously attended other universities including SMU)
- Proof of payment for the non-refundable application fee.
For international students applying to study at SMU:
- All non-South African citizens and non-permanent residents must obtain a study permit before registering as students.
- Applications for study permits should be submitted to the South African Home Affairs, Consulate, or High Commissioner in your country of residence/origin in favour of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU).
- The study permit should be submitted during registration.
- The application fee is R300 and is non-refundable.
