CPUT Residences

CPUT Residences

The CPUT Residences provide an excellent accommodation option for students at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), offering a secure and comfortable living space. With over 13,400 students accommodated across multiple campuses in the Cape Peninsula, CPUT offers both local and international students a supportive environment that fosters academic success. CPUT has over 30 residences at any given point to house its hefty student population of over 30,000 students. CPUT also has an off-campus private accommodation accreditation program which seeks to address the ever-growing need for more housing for students.

There are more than 25 residences available at CPUT, each varying in location and facilities. While not all are situated on the Main Campus, they offer a wide range of options to meet the diverse needs of students. These residences create opportunities for personal growth, ensuring that students graduate not only with a degree but also with essential life skills to succeed in the world beyond university.

The student experience in CPUT Residences is designed to support academic achievement, social development, and overall health and wellness. Students benefit from an environment that encourages learning, personal development, and community engagement. CPUT Residences are spread across different campuses, including Bellville, Mowbray, and Cape Town, ensuring students are well-positioned to take advantage of campus life, academic resources, and transport links.

Types Of CPUT Residences

There are three types of university-managed accommodation options available for students:

  • University-owned residences
  • University-leased residences
  • University-accredited residences

CPUT Off-Campus Private Accommodation

CPUT offers an off-campus Housing Accreditation Program to help manage the demand for student accommodation when university-owned, leased, or accredited residences are full. This program makes it easier and safer for students to enter into agreements with accommodation providers, knowing the university has thoroughly vetted the quality of each property.

Another option for students is non-accredited private boarding, where students find their own accommodation. If students are receiving funding, they must inform the Financial Aid or Bursaries office about their housing arrangements to ensure everything is properly documented.

In both cases, the university acts as the bursar, and it’s the student’s responsibility to ensure that their accommodation information is recorded with the appropriate office. Self-funded students can also explore non-university-controlled accommodation options that best suit their needs

CPUT Residence Application And Registration Process

The Housing unit reserves at least 30% of all available spaces for First-Year students. Those who have completed and passed matric by the time of selection will be placed during the October/November selection period. First-year students still awaiting their matric results will only be selected and placed at the start of the year.

The application form from the Registration office has two sections: one for academic information and one for accommodation. This structure ensures that both parts reach the academic departments and the Housing Unit simultaneously, streamlining the selection and placement process. It also allows the unit to communicate effectively with students and process first-year applications using existing staff, without needing additional contracted help. Consider the following to apply for a residence at CPUT;

For First-Year Students

  • Go to the Student Housing office with your proof of acceptance or registration.
  • Collect a green and white debit form from the residence where you’ve been assigned.
  • Pay at the cashiers in the administration building.
  • Return the debit forms to the Student Housing office for a debit stamp and official receipt.
  • Take one of the forms to your assigned residence.

*For First-Time Applicants (Senior Students Who Haven’t Stayed at Residences Before)

  • First-time applicants will be allocated accommodation in February or March.
  • Allocation will depend on available spaces after first-year students and senior students have been placed.

For Senior Students

  • Senior students must return to the residence they stayed in the previous year.
  • Those who have not applied for accommodation will not be allocated space.
  • Senior students can move back in a day before their registration date.

NB: Due to a limited number of accommodation spaces available, application for residence does not guarantee placement in residence even if you are academically accepted into a programme.
