Please Read Thoroughly Below Before You continue with your application
- You are allowed to apply for two study choices. If you wish to apply for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, you should apply separately and provide the required documentation. However, you only pay one application fee for both.
- Apply online for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes by clicking here.
- Apply Online for Residence by clicking here
- You should pay the nonrefundable application fee of R300.00. When making a payment, reference your ID or Passport number.
- No manual posted or over-the-counter applications will be accepted.
How To Upload Outstanding Supporting Documents
- Here is the step-by-step guide on how to upload documents on the online portal;

- Log onto the portal using your student number and pin
- Once logged in, click on Academic Application from the left menu
- Click again on the certificate seen, this is where you need to upload any outstanding documents.
Required Document to Attache When Applying to SMU
Upload Scanned Documents (Undergraduate Applicants):
Please remember to upload the following certified and individually scanned (PDF format only) documents:
- Certified copy of your ID/passport document (compulsory).
- Certified Grade 11 end-of-year examination results (for those currently in Grade 12) or your National Senior/Matric/IEB Certificate (if you have already completed Grade 12).
- Those rewriting the NSC must indicate on the application and submit proof of rewriting.
- Certified copies of your degree certificate(s) and academic record (if you attended or are currently a student at SMU or another university).
- Certified copy of your marriage certificate (if applicable).
- Proof of payment of the compulsory and non-refundable application fee of R300.00
Upload Scanned Documents (Postgraduate Applicants):
- Matric exemption certificate (including subject marks)
- ID document / Passport / Work permit / Study permit
- Diploma/Degree certificate/s
- Comprehensive academic record (indicating marks obtained for subjects)
- Certificate of registration with the relevant professions council (if applicable)
- Letter of appointment as Registrar with a date of assumption of duty: Applicants for M Med and M Dent students NB: letter from the employer, e.g. Hospital HR.
- Motivational letter and CV (Public Health and MPharm applicants only)
- Students with non-South African qualifications must attach an SAQA evaluation certificate with their previous degrees obtained.
- Non-refundable compulsory application fee of R300
Application Procedure And Requirements
- An application form obtainable from Home Affairs,
- A valid passport (for a year or more),
- Admission letter from the University,
- A letter from the institution in support of your study visa (International office),
- Bank statement – Copy of passport or I.D of parent or guardian responsible for the financial support and a supporting letter,
- A study visa fee of R425-00,
- Proof of medical aid cover confirming that you will be covered while in SA. Medical reports (including Radiology & Pathology).
- A police clearance certificate from your country of origin,
- Repatriation fee of R585-00,
- Copy of yellow fever vaccination (If relevant),
- If the applicant is under 21 years old, there should be a letter of consent from the parent or guardian.
Admission And Registration Of First-Time Entering Students
- Final selections and admissions will take place in January 2025 after the release of Grade 12 examination results.
- After selections are made by the School Selection Committees, all applicants will be informed about the outcome of their applications through sms and email.
- Applicants can also check the status of their applications on the SMU website (using self-help portal) in January 2025 after the release of Grade 12 examination results.
- Admitted applicants will be given three (3) days to accept or decline their study offers online, using their laptops or smartphones. If you do not respond within the given time, your place will be given to another applicant because there are limited places.
- Admitted applicants should register within three (3) days after accepting their study offers, otherwise, their places will be given to other applicants.
- Admitted applicants will receive admission letters with information about registration and fees. They will also be given information about student orientation where they will be informed about the University, its structures and important services available to students. The information will also be made available on the University website
- Applicants are also able to check the status of their applications on the SMU website (self-help platform portal).
